Route 66, also known as The Mother Road, officially opened in 1926 creating the first Federal highway system in the United States. Unlike the Interstates of today, Route 66 was a “cobbling together” of various existing roads: local, State, and even National roads, into a single route that traversed the country from Chicago to Los Angeles - that was also the shortest, most direct route, at 2,400 miles.
