The NoDAPL protests that unfolded at the Lakota Reservation of Standing Rock, in North Dakota, was about more than the stoppage of an oil pipeline passing through Rez land, and underneath the Missouri River. It was about “bringing all of the Nations together so that they could rise as one” In the end much was lost… and the pipeline went through.
This large banner hung at the edge of the Oceti Sakowin encampment at Standing Rock, adjacent to ND Highway 1806. The impetus for this banner was over concerns that police were concerned that weapons existed within the encampment.
Within the Octeti Sakowin encampment there was a diversity in the structures people erected.
Some structures were even built as permanent structures.
In the central part of the camp was a Medic tent that resembled a MASH triage unit in a combat zone.
Tribes from the Pacific Northwest brought with them their traditional hand-carved canoes. In September of that year protestors - indigenous and non-indigenous alike, participated in the re-enactment of a traditional Native ceremony when boats from another tribe arrive at the land of another.
Protestors gathered on the lower mall of the North Dakota State Capitol to peacefully protest the stoppage of the pipeline.
